FDA preparing to clear 10M J&J vaccine doses made at troubled plant

The Food and Drug Administration is preparing to clear for use nearly 10 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine made in a Baltimore plant that accidentally contaminated a batch of the company’s vaccine in March, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The bottom line: Those doses could wind up being shipped overseas as part of the Biden administration’s plan to donate vaccine to countries in need. U.S. demand for vaccination is slowing, and many states have said they have surplus Johnson & Johnson shots.

Background: The FDA has been reviewing remaining vaccine doses made at the plant to ensure they are safe for use. That includes J&J shots as well as 60 million doses of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine.
